ANCIENT EGYPT. RARE CARNELIAN STONE HEART AMULET. 1250 B.C
A carnelian amulet finely carved in the form of a human heart, a powerful symbol of intellect, memory, and moral conscience in ancient Egyptian belief. This amulet shows anatomical curvature with a stylized aorta and vessels rendered at the top. The ib, or heart, was considered the seat of thought, emotion, memory, and morality. It was the only organ not removed during mummification, as it was essential for the “Weighing of the Heart” judgment before the gods. Heart amulets were placed within the mummy wrappings to ensure protection and divine favor in the afterlife. According to Spell 29B of the Book of the Dead, carnelian was expressly prescribed for such amulets due to its invigorating and protective properties. This example likely served a protective and spiritual role in the afterlife journey.
