ANCIENT EGYPT- SERPANTINE STONE CHEST ORNAMENT. NEW KINGDOM 14TH - 13TH CENTURY B.C
Chest ornament with Egyptian gods . The protector of the pharoahs in the afterlife the god Anubis and the ruler of the underworld, Osiris, sit on either side of the sun god Kheperi, who resembles a scarab. On the reverse sideis a djed pillar and an ankh. The ornament was placed on the mummy's chest. Date: New Kingdom, Ramesside period, ca. 1300-1200 BC.
INSCRIPTION ON THE BACK:
this is the hieroglyphic text of Chapter 30 of the Book of the Dead. This text, or portions of it, often appeared on the back side of the heart scarab wrapped into a mummy, above the deceased's heart. It is a plea to the heart of the deceased not to betray its owner and speak badly of him (or her) when they face eternal judgement before Osiris and seek admittance into the afterlife.
