ROMAN. Uncertain Near East. Marcus Aurelius, as Caesar (AD 139-161). Lead seal? (29mm, 16.00g). The purpose of this object is uncertain. The raised edge around the circumference of the obverse suggests that the portrait type was struck onto a circular piece of lead possibly used to seal the mouth of a jar. A lead test strike seems improbable. Likewise, the uniface quality and relatively large size of the piece make it unlikely to have served as a kind of tessera.
