ROMANO-BYZANTINE. Square bronze weight (12 X 10mm, 3.61g) inscribed with dots. 4th-5th century AD. The size, shape and weight of this piece conforms to Romano-Byzantine nomisma weights, but the arrangement of the dots on the top do not form the expected letter N to indicate the weight of one nomisma. It is unclear what letter or symbol the dots are intended to represent here. For similar square weights with dotted value marks see Hendin , Ancient Scale Weights 353, 355 (nomisma) and 363, 367 (2 scripula).
